We Want the Super Colon
For the past 22 years, the St. Regis Mohawk Health Services, Health Promotion/Disease & Injury Prevention Committee has hosted a Community Wellness Day. The main focus of Wellness Day is to increase health awareness and promote physical activity. Every year we try to come up with creative, fun and interactive ways to get our message out there abd we encourage all our vendors, programs, agencies and organizations to do the same. We believe that putting a “fun” element into our health related messages and activities will help people to retain the information much better.
The goal of the “We Want the Super Colon” project is to increase awareness about colon cancer, to educate the community about risk factors and increase screening rates. We will have a Colon Risk Walk around our walking trail. We will encourage community members, young and old alike to participate. We will have people dressed up as risk factors walking alongside our walkers. All participants will be given a sheet of paper listing the risk factors. They will be encouraged to stop at the various screening stations set up along the trail. There they will talk to people about importance of screening and prevention through physical activity, living a health lifestyle, diet/nutrition, and smoking cessation. The Super Colon will be set up inside the trail where people can go and take a look at what a healthy colon and a colon with cancer looks like either before they go on the Colon Risk Walk or after they are done. At the conclusion of the walk, all participants, young and old will be given $20.00 gift certificates to be used at area farmer’s markets.
