Project Giddian

Project Giddian is a pilot project from the initiative of a local university student who recently lost her uncle to colorectal cancer, and wanted to make a difference in Winston-Salem and the surrounding community, by advocating awareness for education and screening with the assistance of Cancer Services’ colorectal cancer education program. This project will begin with adults 50 years and older to enlighten and educate them on certain risk factors, when to get screened, and the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer.

Our goals are to reach as many as possible but to have at least 50 individuals commit to a screening appointment with our assistance. Then our team will follow up and track these individuals’ treatments before cancer developed in increments of 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months.

We will provide information sessions on Colorectal Cancer awareness. From these sessions we will request contact information and distribute questionnaires and surveys on how beneficial our sessions were and if they would commit to getting screened. These sessions will be held at churches, barbershops and beauty shops in partnership with Cancer Services’ Body & Soul Programs.

With the information, we will contact each individual, and ask if they have decided to make an appointment or made any other health or lifestyle changes since attending the session. All information will be compiled and shared when we meet during our last session and we have a huge celebration of life, sharing of their experiences, lifestyle changes, and what they have learned through our project. Most significantly we know this project will contribute to the increased percentage of those being screened to 80 percent by 2018.

We will document stories and testimonials for those who completed screening in order to utilize their stories in motivating other members of our community to get screened.
