  • Submitted by Iowa Cancer Consortium
  • from Iowa City, IA

The Iowa Cancer Consortium and partners across the state are coming together to support 80% screened by 2018 at the 2014 Iowa Colorectal Cancer Roundtable. The Roundtable will bring together public and private organizations including public health, health systems, non-profit organizations, quality improvement organizations and insurance payers to provide leadership, advocacy, and articulated commitment to deploy statewide initiatives to increase colorectal cancer screening in Iowa throughout the next four years.

The Roundtable will allow key stakeholders to strategize with their peers initiatives to utilize recently developed resources to bring about systematic changes at the provider, community and individual engagement levels. These Iowa specific resources include:  the Online Provider Toolkit, Iowa Cancer Maps which show persistence of colorectal incidence and mortality across the state, small media and social media pieces, the drink coaster campaign, and ‘Iowa Get Screened’ colorectal screening program sites, FluFIT pilot site data and study results analyzing distance to screening site and screening percentages.

The Roundtable will convene in November 2014 to solidy high level commitment to the 2018 goal, review current initiatives, develop statewide deployment strategies and discuss additional needs relating to geographic barriers and underserved communities across the state. The Roundtable will also address implementation of the Affordable Care Act and helping the newly enrolled understand the preventative services that are included in their coverage, including activating colorectal cancer screening.

The recommendations of the Roundtable will be then utilized for coordinated implementation and development of future programs across the state to acheive the 2018 goals.
